The Pio Monte della Misericordia Palace is the historical seat of the association that gives its name to the museum complex itself. The aim of the 7 lords who founded it at the beginning of 17th century was to do some good and works of mercy. That mission has been carried on since then. On the ground floor, inside an intimate area, the church of Nostra Signora della Misericordia houses the artworks that tell visitors about the charity activities the Association has been running for more than 400 years.
Over the high altar, the large Caravaggio canvas represents all the corporal works of mercy in one scene. His masterpiece is still the Association manifesto that plays the deep meaning of mercy performed through real help to others.
On the first floor, the Quadreria recreates the fascinating itinerary through the halls where associates still meet. In the same area visitors can see the persons who run the Pio Monte at present and can admire furnishing, objects and artworks composing a rich private collection.
The Museo per tutti guide of Pio Monte della Misericordia suggests a discovering trail of the Association committed to people’s good. The detailed analysis of the painting “Le 7 opere della misericordia” by Caravaggio and of the other artworks in the church is the inspiration to deepen into the theme of Mercy as a translation of concrete help and support to those who are in distress. The trail continues with the explanation of some artworks on the upper floor. The Palace spaces are wide and well-lit. A large internal courtyard is available as resting area in a reserved space, far from town chaos.
